Book description
‘There he is,’ whispered Vixen. ‘It’s true then,’ said Buck Rabbit. ‘He’s just a small mole,’ said Doe Rabbit. ‘He’s not just a mole,’ said Vixen.  A great queen loses a ring. Hundreds of years later a ring slips onto the paw of a young mole. The mole grows to be a wise and trusted leader of Gilly Wood and all the animals that live there. But a great threat is coming. Can one small mole save a whole valley? Mole sets out to do just that with friends he makes along the way and the strange thing on his paw…

My Review
This is a really interesting read that will be enjoyed by both adults and children. I really enjoyed reading this from start to finish and in was really drawn into the lives of Owl and Mole.
I loved how the story started by setting out some history of the area, including the river and the woods. About how the ring became under the tree after a visit from the queen many years ago.
Mole is a very lovable character who has the leadership of Gilly Wood thrust upon him after he finds a ring attached to his foot and the other animals in the wood believe him to be wise. They all start to come to him with their issues and he is able to solve them. I also really enjoy watching the relationship between Mole and Owl develop and when the wood is under attack from poachers then they both hatch a plan to keep them all safe and protect the woods. It isn't long before Mole and Owl find out that the woods are under threat, they could lose their homes and they need to protect it at all costs.
This is a great read that can be read by both adults and children and would be a good book to share at bedtime. The book flows really well and you get a good understanding of how the animals lived.
